“London Sightseeing”
Read the descriptions and name the sights.
1.     It’s a tower of the Houses of Parliament with a huge bell in the clock. It has boomed out the hours since 1859.
2.     It has been the official royal residence since 1837. most mornings, the famous Changing-of-the-Guard Ceremony takes place at its front gates.
3.     it is London’s oldest sight. It consists of a group of structures built around a central tower and surrounded by two stone walls. It has served as a fortress, a palace and a prison. Today it is a national monument and museum.
4.     it is the best known square in the city. In the centre of it is Nelson’s Column on the top of which is a giant stone statue of the British admiral Nelson.
5.     it’s one of the most famous churches in the country. Most British kings and queens were crowned and buried there.
6.     It consists of the House of Lords, where the lords sit, and the House of Commons, where the elected members of Parliament sit. The building has two towers- the Clock Tower (Big Ben) and the Victoria Tower.
7.     It was founded in 1824 and now it contains paintings of many famous West European artists and among them such Renaissance painters as Leonardo da Vonci, Titian, Velasquez and others.
8.     It’s one of the finest historical buildings of London. It’s the greatest work of England’s greatest architect, Sir Christopher Wren. It was built in 1675, then opened in 1697 but was finished only in 1710, when Wren was almost eighty .
9.     It’s a round square where six streets meet.  There is a famous statue of Eros ( the God of Love) in the country. In the evening and at night it’s a colourful sight- all the square is lighted with electric signs; it is full of people, who to go to the theatres, cinemas or restaurants.
10.                       it consists of the National Library and the Museum of History, Archaeology, Art and Ethnography. It has many rooms and exhibition halls which show works of art of different times and countries: Ancient Egypt, Rome, Greece and Britain.
